Note: This is the Windows version of the Macintosh Extractor program, compiled from REALbasic on a Macintosh. Not all Windows features are fully supported.

Extract EPS files and raster art from Adobe Illustrator files

Extractor extracts EPS graphics or raster images such as TIFF files or rasterized art embedded in Adobe Illustrator files. Its a standalone product (not a plugin) that doesnt require Adobe Illustrator to work.

Note: Extractor extracts only ASCII-format EPS files. EPS files saved with binary data may not extract properly. It's highly recommended that you use Illustrator 8 or higher to extract the file in the warning dialog that appears when opening the file.

Using Extractor

Extractor will work on one Adobe Illustrator file at a time. Open a file by selecting Open from the File menu, or by pressing Command-O, then use the standard Macintosh file dialog boxes to select an Adobe Illustrator file to open.

You can also open a file by dragging its icon into the Extractor programs icon.

If a file contains EPS artwork that can be extracted, the files will be listed in the programs window. To extract an item in the list, Double-click the item or select it and then click the Extract EPS button. Youll be prompted for a file name and location.

Theres no way the program can tell ahead of time if there are raster objects to be extracted, so to look for raster art, click the button logically labeled "Look for raster art." If a raster object is found, youll be shown some information regarding the object and you can choose to save the raster object as a TIFF file, continue looking for other raster objects, or stop the search and return to the main window.

While Extractor is working, you can click the cancel button in the progress bar or press the Escape key to cancel an operation.

To open another file you must first close any currently open file.

To close a file, simply select Close from the File menu or type Command-W.

Batch mode

If you check the Batch checkbox in the main window, certain operations will be more automated. In batch mode the program adopts the following behaviors:

Double-clicking an item in the placed art list will still extract just that file, but clicking the Extract EPS button will extract all EPS graphics found. Files will be automatically saved with their original name, and placed in the same directory as the Adobe Illustrator file you opened. If a file by that name already exists, Extractor will add a number after the name.

"Look for raster art" will look for and automatically extract any raster art found, naming the files "Raster art 1.tif" and "Raster art 2.tif" etc., renaming them as needed to avoid overwriting any existing files.

If you open a file by dragging its icon into Extractors, Extractor will automatically extract any EPS graphics, then automatically extract any raster objects, placing them in the same directory as the file its extracting from.
